Lab-Grown or Natural: An Honest Comparison

Same material, different origin, very different price. What is genuinely identical, what genuinely differs, and how a bespoke jeweller counsels the choice.

This is the question we are asked most often now, and it is usually asked nervously, as though there is a correct answer the client is expected to already know.

There is not. There is a set of trade-offs.

What is the same

A laboratory-grown diamond has essentially the same chemical, physical and optical properties as a natural one. It is diamond. It is not a simulant, not cubic zirconia, not moissanite. It scratches what diamond scratches and it returns light the way diamond returns light.

Telling them apart reliably requires specialised instruments. Not a loupe, not a jeweller's eye, not a hardness test at home.

What a simulant is, and why the distinction matters

This is where most of the confusion in the market lives, so it is worth being blunt.

A laboratory-grown diamond is diamond. Same crystal, same carbon, grown rather than mined.

A simulant is a different material that looks like diamond. Cubic zirconia and moissanite are the common ones. They have their own optical properties, their own hardness, and a small fraction of the price.

Neither is dishonest in itself. Both become dishonest the moment they are sold as something they are not. If a price looks impossible for the size, ask precisely which of these three you are being offered, and ask for it in writing.

What differs

Origin. One formed over geological time and was mined. The other was grown in a controlled environment over weeks.

Documentation. Grading laboratories issue distinct reports for laboratory-grown stones, and the stones themselves are laser-inscribed to identify them permanently. This is deliberate. Nobody should be able to lose track of which they own.

Price and its behaviour. Laboratory-grown stones cost considerably less at the point of sale. How that price behaves over time is a different question, and anyone who answers it with certainty is guessing.

The resale question, answered carefully

People ask whether a laboratory-grown stone will hold its value. The honest answer has two parts.

The first is that most jewellery of any origin is a poor instrument for holding value. Retail carries making, setting and margin that you do not recover on resale. That is true of natural stones too, and it surprises people.

The second is that laboratory-grown production has scaled quickly and prices at retail have moved accordingly. What that means for a stone bought today, resold years from now, is not something we can tell you, and we would be suspicious of anyone who claims they can.

Buy the stone because you want to wear it. If your goal is to store value, that is a different conversation and jewellery is rarely the right answer to it.

Size, or quality, for the same money

This is the trade-off in its most practical form.

A fixed budget buys a visibly larger laboratory-grown stone, or a visibly better one at the same size, than it buys natural. For clients who want presence on the hand, or who want to move up a clarity or colour grade they can actually see, that is a real and rational advantage.

Our only caution is not to spend the whole difference on weight. A larger stone that is poorly proportioned still reads flat. Put some of the saving into cut quality and the ring will look better than the carat figure suggests.

How we counsel it

If the budget is fixed and the priority is size or performance for the money, laboratory-grown is a rational choice and we will happily set one.

If the piece is meant to be handed to someone in forty years, origin tends to matter more to people than they expect it to when they are choosing.

What we will not do is pretend one is a compromise and the other is virtue. They are different products with different reasons, and the client is the only person who can weigh them.

Whichever you choose, insist the invoice and the report say plainly which one you bought. That single line protects you, and it protects whoever inherits the piece.
